Education in the Green Space

Created to understand how we can use green spaces for Educational purposes and how to make the most of them.

Videos

The BBC created Terrific Scientific and the videos cover lots of science topics and are aimed at Years 5 and 6.

The National Geographic Kids YouTube channel has some great intro videos about all sorts of animals from all around the world. These would be ideal for KS1 classes, or possible lower KS2 if combining with habitat topics.

There is definitely a lack of really good online plant resources aimed at kids, however these Nature Boom Time videos are fantastic! We found that they made plants really exciting and definitely worth watching! Ideal for KS2 as they touch on more complex global issues as well as different types of plant, including some marine ones!

This video is one of many linked to the education resources for GCSE and A Level students and educators available from the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) at the University of Birmingham education. Click here for the University of Birmingham Educational Resources site.

This short video explains how to measure diameter at breast height of a tree. This is an important measurement for when calculating tree growth and is required for further calculations of carbon storage.

This short video explains how to measure the height of a tree using the special tool provided in the BIFoR in a Box resource.

This short video explains how to measure install a band onto a tree so incremental tree growth measurements can be taken. It is a more reliable measurement of tree growth (than repeated measurements of diameter/circumference) as the band is always in the same position and as a tree is not always perfectly symmetrical measuring the diameter of a tree at different parts even at the exact same height, leads to differences in readings.
