Documentation and Resources

Hospital Heist

Hospital Heist provides a way to get students engaged with forensic science, allowing them to spend a day as a forensic scientist investigating a crime.

For Teachers

From this page you can access all the materials required to run a successful Hospital Heist day at your school! Core Resources contains all the documents, presentations, and other resources necessary set the day up, inform teachers about what they’ll be doing, and get the day started and finished with introductions and conclusions. The pages further down contain the presentations for each individual session.

Core Resources:

These are all the resources for before the day to look over, at the beginning of the day to kick it off, and for the end of the day to conclude everything. Each session has it’s own page with it’s own important documents and resources, however the framework for the day can be found here.

Fingerprint Analysis:

On the student section of this page students can begin to look at different types of fingerprints, take a quiz to test their knowledge about fingerprint analysis, and try the fingerprint challenge found on this page (without the answers)!

Fibre Analysis:

Some hair was found in the CEO’s office, and students can analyse this in an attempt to find the culprit. In this sessions students will learn all about fibre analysis. This includes how to use a microscope to examine fibres, how to distinguish between different animal and hair fibres, and using their skills in analysing fibres to rule out suspect(s) from the Hospital Heist case.

Ballistic Analysis:

The burglar had to shoot through a lock when breaking in to steal the artwork. In this sessions students will learn all about ballistic analysis, rifling in guns, firing pins, and the chemical side of gunpowder residue.

Document Analysis:

The burglar printed out a map of the hospital, and wrote down the key to the door with a passcode. Thankfully somebody found the paper scrunched up so it can be analysed! In this sessions students will learn all about document analysis, how to examine printer codes and paper strengths, and use their skills to rule out suspect(s) from the Hospital Heist case.

Summing Up:

After completing all of the other sessions in the day, students can reflect on what they’ve found, sort through the evidence, and present their conclusions to the rest of the class. This is the perfect opportunity to students to look back on the day, practice their scientific deductive methodology, and to gain confidence in presenting project findings to a group.

Running Hospital Heist in an Online Teaching Environment:

We have made an altered version of Hospital Heist and adapted the PowerPoints so that it can be run in online lesson formats, where the students are learning remotely from their home and so have limited access to resources. All the information needed for them to learn about forensic science and solve the crime is provided in these PowerPoints.
